Personal Branding: Strategies on How To Choose Domain Name
Personal branding is very important especially if you are a network marketer. I believe strongly in the power of developing and promoting your brand. Your personal brand is what you are telling the world who you are and what you are about. It is not just enough to be passionate about what you do, it’s the credibility, and authority and your being genuine that you build that will make people want to work with you.
Before you start a blog, you want to buy a domain name that is short and memorable. I prefer to use my real name as this is the quickest way of developing authority and trust in the internet. Hopefully you do not have a common name so that you find it difficult to purchase a dot.com domain although nowadays even dot net or even dot org is perfectly good to go.
Let us look at what you need to watch out for before your purchase your domain:
Personal Branding – Personal Name:
If you are an expert in a specific field and you want to be known as one so why not choose a domain name related to that field? For example Elizabeth Horlemann has has a training blog at Blogging for Gold and people can now see me as a professional coach and trainer. As far as personal branding is concerned, this works should work well because I want to brand myself as a trainer and coach specializing in blogging.
Personal Branding Nick Names:
If you have a nick name which is well known, then you want to be brand your nick name so why not purchase a domain name that contains your nick name instead of your real name. This is advisable especially if you have an extremely long name which is hard to remember.
Personal Branding – Use Local Extensions:
The dot com domains are very popular, so you may find it difficult to find a name that you want to settle for using dot.com. If you are trying to brand yourself with a specific audience such as individuals in Germany, why not purchase a dot de extension? Alternatively you can consider looking to brand yourself with non-profits you should consider about buying a domain with a dot.org extension, this is an excellent way of personal branding.
Give It A Personal Touch:
Always try to use something that appeals to people when creating a blog name that will help you brand yourself. Something that appeals to all our 5 senses – sight, touch, hearing, smell and taste is the good old trick that you can use. Good examples are like Horlemann Power, Horlemann Speed etc.
If you have already created a blog and your domain name no longer appeals to you especially after reading this article, no problem for every problem there is always a solution and the solution here is to purchase an appropriate domain name and forward mask your “wrong domain” to the new one so that you are still personal branding yourself.

Short and sweet and to the point is the key to choosing a great domain name. Something that appeals to others. I like your suggestion of sticking with .com, .net, and .org as these are well known. Fab post Liz and thanks for sharing.

Hi Suzanne,
Thanks very much for your comments and visit to my blog
Hi Elizabeth, liked the article.
I have ALWAYS used this as a great example of using you head when buying a domain. In the UK, (very early on in internet history) a big Do It Yourself (huge hardware store) bought their domain name. The store is B & Q
The domain they bought DIY.com
Simple, does what it says on the tin, and very easy to remember.
Slightly odder is that it appears they have never tried to buy any thing with a b and a q in it (maybe the & being an illegal domain address character stumpled them… BandQ comes to mind!)
Also, if you use WordPress, and wish to change a domain, or have more than one, there is a plugin for that…..

Hi Jon,
That is really an excellent strategy which is also very effective when branding oneself. The easier the name, the more likely that people will remember it easily.
Great article! There are a lot of things in this article I didn’t consider before. I will share.

I hope some smart beginners are able to read your post Elizabeth because you’ve shared some very simple yet potent tips here:)
In fact, in my opinion, if these tips aren’t followed it can make or break a successful marketing career.
Great post again Elizabeth, I agree with you that branding ourselves will ultimately get people to trust and know who we are. I do think that we do evolve in our journey online so we have to be prepared to tweak our profile without totally re-inventing ourselves. I see many people jump too quickly into branding themselves without truly have a direction. It’s better to take our time, learn share and brand ourselves when we are comfortable with our growth.

Elizabeth,
Great post! I love your take on how to set up the right Domain name. Personally, I use my name for my blog, because that is what I am branding me. Whatever company or business I own, will still have my brand behind it.

Hi Alecia,
Thanks very much for visiting my blog and for your valuable comments
Hi Elizabeth,
I was told very early on to add your real name to everything you sign up for, domains, social media everything. Our name is our brand and we must use it to it’s most effectiveness. Great post for anyone wanting to know about personal branding.
